It is the 1st half of April and I am finally taking my first deep breath to review the first quarter of 2013 and launch into a flurry of activity into the new financial year. 2013 has been an amazing year so far – a year of breaking through ceilings and discovering new openings, new paradigms. Today I want to share two of those new openings with you!
First came my experience with my body. For years, I have lived with extra kilos of weight balanced by flexibility, high energy and bright shiny skin and eyes. I have always walked, gone to the gym, swum, trekked and done yoga regularly and with lots of enthusiasm. I have also stayed within limits – I seldom run, I never do certain yoga asanas and navigate stairs with reluctance. This “self-limiting” came into focus like a camera lens this January. I participated in a one-month Vinyasa yoga training in Goa with a beautiful, gentle and very insightful teacher,Nicole Sat Sukhi. At every practice, Nicole would tell us to really see where we were holding fears, where our mind and our limiting beliefs were deciding what our bodies were doing on the mat. And on day four in the middle of a particularly difficult practice, I felt this explosion inside my heart. Tears flowed unchecked as I knew what I had been unable to see or know for so long – I do not run because I do not run. I never do the headstand because I never do the headstand. There is NO physical reason for not doing those activities. It is self-limiting belief – a way of putting a box around what is possible. And to my surprise, I was in a headstand before the day was over – THAT DAY!! What was even more hilarious was that I was the only one shocked – everyone around me supported me like I have been doing it all my life. My learning: every once in a while, it is almost mandatory to put oneself into an uncomfortable space. Only when we flirt with our boundaries – floors, ceilings, whatever – can we discover whether they are doorways to new openings, new worlds, new paradigms.
After that explosive month, you can only guess how I came back home – I was brimming!! I was ready to take on new challenges, create new opportunities and share this exuberance with new friends, clients and collaborators. And of course, when you are clear, existence aligns to support you! For over a year, I have been experiencing a gap in my leadership coaching practice. Everyday, I have felt that there is a basic preparation – a common start point so to speak – that is missing. So with each client, the way I coach has to be customized in an inefficient way. Let me explain: it is like I am teaching algebra to ten students. Now I know that each one will learn with different methods – this much customization is expected for sure. However, imagine if I have to teach each student in a different language – Hindi, English, Tamil…Now this becomes cumbersome and even wasteful. It would be lovely if everyone learned one common language – then I could teach algebra and calculus. Someone else can teach the same ten students geography. It becomes easier with a common language.
I applied this analogy to Leadership Coaching – in collaboration with a friend who knew design and marketing, I created a simple, easy-to-use workbook that helps you learn that common language, common basis of Leadership. We even created a one-day workshop that teaches you how to use that workbook most effectively. And it all came together in February upon my return from Goa – in matter of weeks, everything fell into place effortlessly. For me, this was the second opening for this year and even more path-breaking! Since this new learning system was announced to the world, my life has kicked into a higher gear. It has clearly shown me how much room I had to grow and diversify, how much more I had to share and most of all, how much more I had to learn. Now I am like a beginner again – I am learning to manage my day differently and I am re-learning to balance the increased work-load with other things I love to do. And yes, I am also learning about this pesky process called SEO – it seems like reaching my clients and making sure they find me requires me to upgrade my technology skills as well!!!
I welcome you to check out Learning Essence and please give me your feedback – I look forward to hearing from you!!
